Eleven Durham Tech students completed the Basic Law Enforcement Training program and held the first of two commencement ceremonies on Friday, January 23 at Smith Middle School in Chapel Hill. Seven of the eleven grads will be working for the Chapel Hill Police Department; two with UNC-CH Public Safety; one with Carrboro Police and one with the City of Stem Police.
The names of the graduates pictured are as follows, left to right: Vincent Bivona, Kevin Patterson, Christopher Smith, Kevin Kuhn, Jeremy Sauer, German Barcenas, Lori McLamb, Cole Daniels, Jennifer Liles, and Michael Wimberly (not pictured: Shawn Smith). Congratulations and best wishes to our graduates!
the MLK day events held on Friday, Jan. 16 and Monday, Jan. 19 were very successful. On Friday, faculty and staff enjoyed a wonderful program with special recognition for Candice Capers for her 17 years of service to the MLK committee. We’ll sure miss you, Candice!
Lots of “kindergarten kits” were assembled for Durham’s Partnership for Children, and warm clothing items were delivered to residents of McDougald Terrace. The Food Pantry offered departments and programs the opportunity to “adopt” the pantry for a period of time. Contact Sally Parlier if you have not yet signed up!
And on Monday, faculty, staff, and students gathered in the Multi-Purpose Room and the Cafeteria to package meals for the United Way and InterFaith Food Shuttle, which will be distributed to needy families in our area. Students from Duke and NCCU joined in along with members of Rotary Clubs throughout Durham.
Note: there are a number of XL and 2XL “MLK Day 2014” t-shirts left over from Monday’s event that are available to anyone who wants them (free of charge). They are in the Faculty/Staff lounge on the first floor of the Wynn Student Services Center.
On December 19, the Practical Nursing program honored 18 graduates during its 161st Pinning Ceremony held at the NC Biotechnology Center. After Dr. Ingram welcomed attendees, LaShanda Brown, MSN, PhD(c), a sister of one of the graduates, addressed the graduates. Several students presented farewell addresses, followed by Magdiel Rodriguez-Lopez’s entertaining reflections, using a Nursing Care Plan style, on the struggles and hardships students faced during the program. According to Rodriquez-Lopez, students experienced “alteration in sleep patterns, as evidenced by sleep deprivation, long hours studying, bloodshot eyes, early waking hours, and overindulgence in coffee!” After the ceremony, graduates and their guests enjoyed a reception of food, cake, and beverages catered through the Biotechnology Center.
An extra special thank you to the Practical Nursing Executive Committee, PN faculty, and Student Senate for their support.
Eliza Murphy recently shared some good news about one of her ACA 122 students:
“Jimmy Acevedo just got into the NASA Community College Scholars program. Jimmy is currently enrolled in the Associate in Science program and has a keen eye on eventually working in the aerospace industry. To qualify for this program, students must be enrolled in a community college and have demonstrated success in nine or more credits of STEM-related courses. Once students are accepted into the program, they must complete a five-week online course. A number of those students who successfully complete the online course are hand-selected to participate in an expenses-paid trip to a NASA space center.”
