Wham! Bam! Poetry Slam!


The judges give high marks to one contestant’s poem.

Ten Durham Tech students took the stage at the ERC Auditorium on Tuesday, December 2 to compete in a poetry slam. Presented by the Vive/Viva the Arts Committee and emceed by Dasan Ahanu from Bull City Poetry Slam, the slam went three rounds, with judges from the ASUT English department and library staff picking the winners and the enthusiastic crowd cheering all the contestants. Congratulations to the winners:

  • First place: Jamayah Parrish
  • Second place : Elonzo Willis
  • Third place: Christina Boyd

The three students won generous gift cards to the Durham Tech bookstore donated by the Durham Tech Foundation.

The students delivered poems that fell into a wide range of style, subject matter tone, and delivery. The poems explored issues of womanhood, identity, relationships, hope, special needs children, body image, racial profiling, and motherhood.
