Lea Bingham and Daysha Lawrence have been selected as the first two Durham Tech instructors to participate in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) in the Teaching-Learning Center (TLC).
SoTL is the synthesis of teaching, learning, and research in higher education. The TLC supports full-time and part-time instructor participation in SoTL projects that substantially change the ways in which instructors teach. SoTL is a three-semester process that culminates in the participants sharing their research and experiences with the larger college community.
Lea is a full-time English instructor in the Arts, Sciences, and University Transfer department. She will receive a mini-sabbatical from teaching in Fall 2015, so she can research her SoTL project about knowledge transfer from the composition classroom to writing across the curriculum. Lea will develop research-based teaching methods, assignments, and activities that all college English instructors can use to improve students’ transfer of skills.
Daysha is a part-time sociology instructor in the Arts, Sciences, and University Transfer department. Daysha’s SoTL project will focus on increasing instructor-student contact in SOC 210 (Introduction to Sociology) online and then in assessing whether that increased contact yields increased rates of student success. Upon completion of the three-semester SoTL project, Daysha will receive a $500 stipend.
Round 2 applications for SoTL will be due on September 1, 2015. Look for information sessions in the TLC or contact Gabby McCutchen, TLC director, for more details.
Congratulations, Lea and Daysha! We look forward to hearing about your results!
