27 Durham Tech employees complete Mental Health First Aid certification

The Teaching-Learning Center (TLC) recently hosted an eight-hour training facilitated by Alliance Behavioral Healthcare. The training certified the participants to provide immediate care in a mental health crisis in the same way that CPR training certifies people to provide care in a physical health crisis. Participants learned risk factors and warning signs of mental health concerns and a five-step action plan to help someone developing a mental health concern or in crisis. The training focused on depression, anxiety, trauma, psychosis, and substance abuse.

Congratulations to the following Durham Tech employees who completed the certification: Audrey Muhammad, Cindy Hardin, Claudia Joyner, Gabby McCutchen, Gina Perryman, Heidi White, Jackie Krohn, Janemarie Baker, Janice Murphy, Jennifer Bennett, Jessica Vaughan, Karin Abell, Kerry Cantwell, Lance Lee, Lea Bingham, Lyndsay Al-Shibli, Marisa Sullivan, Melissa Ockert, Olga Hogrefe, Sandy Young, Sheza Healey, Sue Cheng, Suzi Jaikaran, Svetlana Yokum, Tammy Nelson, Tisha Phillips, and Tracy Mancini.

The TLC will offer additional training to support students with mental health challenges again in Fall 2016. If you want to participate, please look for an announcement at the start of the fall semester.
